Salsipuedes is a great place to camp and get some fun waves. It is a private campground off of the toll road about 20 minutes north of Ensenada. Camping is $8 per night, or $5 to park and surf for the day. There are two completely different surf spots at Salsipuedes. The bay is the most common place to surf, as it works on even small northwest to southwest swells. The wave is a reef peak with rights and lefts, usually better on a medium to high tide. The bay at Salsipuedes is recommended for intermediate surfers on up. The offshore kelp beds and cliffs to the north keep the prevailing north winds from blowing out the waves in the afternoon, so it can stay clean and glassy all day long. The wave at the point is a completely different scenario. It needs a huge northwest swell in order to break and it is a really heavy wave for experts only. Because it takes such a large swell start breaking, the point at Salsipuedes usually only goes off a couple times per year, and tends to have a crowd on it.
We may be losing access to Salsipuedes in the not too distant future. Plans are in place to build condominiums on the bluff starting in 2007, so get it while you can. It is truly one of the most beautiful areas to camp and surf in northern Baja.
